Math: This week we started customary measurement of length and converting within this system. For example, if I have 5 1/2 yards how many feet do I have? We will also be talking about weight and capacity.
We continue to review fractions and decimals. Please work on mixed to improper and improper to mixed, subtracting fractions that require regrouping. One strategy we used was to change the mixed numbers to improper fractions and then subtract. This eliminates the need to regroup! Most students liked this method, although a few preferred to cross out the first mixed number, add that denominator to the numerator and subtract in the traditional way. The other way was to draw a picture.
If you have time, it would help if you could give your student the following practice problems:
Write as a mixed number: 47/4
Write as an improper fraction: 9 3/4
Subtract 7 1/5 - 3 3/5
.7 compares how to .81 (This is tricky if they do not read the numbers aloud or write them both in a place value chart).
