Homework Week of 11/9 to 11/13

Dear Students and Parents,

Here is a breakdown of this week's homework and our class concepts:

Concepts for the Week:

READING: A new take away concept is point of view: first-person or third-person. We are reading both fiction and informational text practicing identifying the themes, comparing characters, supporting our ideas with specific information in the text, and summarizing.

WRITING:  We begin our exploration of caves and spelunking to continue our discussion and practice of opinion writing. We will investigate and consider pros and cons, the other side's point of view, and structure/organization for how to write an opinion paragraph/essay.  Opinion writing will be our focus until Dec 11th.

SPELLING: We are studying more vocabulary words, this time focusing on the root "ped," meaning foot.

MATH: New this week is the Utah core standard that states 4th grade students will multiply a single digit factor by a multi-digit number/factor up to 4 digits. We will learn a few strategies to do this including the standard algorithm, open array, partial products, and the distributive property. We are continuing our discussion of interpreting a multiplication equation as a comparison. For example, 35 = 5 x 7, meaning that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. The students will learn how to solve multiplicative comparison problems with word problems and using a number line as a tool.
